the maíz journey
Step into the heart of our village of El Hato and discover the importance of maíz (corn) in everyday Guatemalan life. Guided by local women, this hands-on cultural experience takes you from the village corn mill to the comal, where you’ll learn the traditional art of making Guatemalan tortillas from scratch.
the maíz journey
Your journey begins with a 15-minute walk from Earth Lodge to the village mill, accompanied by a translator.
Here, local women will share the role maíz plays in their daily lives and the traditions passed down through generations. You’ll learn how corn is traditionally carried in baskets balanced on the head, discover how the village mill grinds corn kernels, and gain insight into how this shared resource brings the community together.
Then, it’s your turn to get involved! Participate in preparing the ground corn and learn how to shape handmade Guatemalan tortillas before cooking them over a traditional comal.
More than a cooking class, this is an opportunity to connect with the people and traditions of El Hato while directly supporting local families through additional income.
